Bio Terrorism

A bioterrorism attack is the deliberate release of viruses, bacteria, or other germs (agents) used to cause illness or death in people, animals, or plants. These agents are typically found in nature, but it is possible that they could be changed to increase their ability to cause disease, make them resistant to current medicines, or to increase their ability to be spread into the environment. Biological agents can be spread through the air, through water, or in food. Terrorists may use biological agents because they can be extremely difficult to detect and do not cause illness for several hours to several days.

Fremont County Public Health has made preparations to distribute free medicines in the event of a bioterrorism attack. It is important for the public not to panic and to follow instructions disseminated through the media.

The following are examples of instructions that may be given to obtain free medicines.

  • Send one adult per household to the medicine dispensing site.
  • Bring a list of medical information—such as medical conditions or allergies—about each member of your household.
  • Make a note if anyone in your family is pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Bring a list with the age and weight of children in your family so that the right amount of medication can be given to you.
